Sääksjärvi primary school presents

Our school

Our school is situated on a hill in Sääksjärvi. Sääksjärvi is a part of Mäntsälä municipality which is located some 60 kilometres from Helsinki, the capital of Finland. We are in the middle of nature and you can see fields and forests all around you, and Sääksjärvi Lake is near, too. Our school has a long history and lots of traditions as it has been operating at the same place since 1891. The old main building has been there from the very beginning and the two other buildings have been built later.

Our school is quite small. There are 102 pupils, six class teachers, an English teacher and a special education teacher as well as two school assistants, a school cook and two cleaning ladies. There are six classes (1,2,3,4,5 and 6) and a preschool class which operates together with class 1. Most of our pupils come to school by bus or by taxi. Some of them cycle or walk.

Welcome to Sääksjärvi primary school!

Interviewing our headmaster

We study Finnish, English, maths, physics, chemistry, history, biology, science, art, music, technical work, textile work, PE and RE in our school. We usually have five lessons a day and 24 lessons a week. We don't have any after school activities but this spring we had a band club.

During the school year we have different themes. One of the themes this year was "tradition week" when we learned about the history and traditions of our school and village. Pupils from different classes gave presentations and some elderly people from Sääkjärvi came to tell about our school in "old days". We also have an active student body which organizes different events such as "Talent Day" and "Colour week". Every now and then we have school bazaars and discos to raise money for our school trips etc. There are lots of festivals, too like Christmas and spring festivals.

Our pupils often take part in sport events between different primary schools in Mäntsälä such as football and ice-hockey tournaments, skiing competitions and track and field games.
